Laksmikanta Roy Choudhury

A brief biography...

This is not the official website of the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family but a tribute to the great spiritual and historical family of Kolkata.

The origin of the family dates back to the 10  TH Century A.D when five Vedic Brahmins were fetched by king Adisura to Bengal for preserving the Vedic cultures which by then was almost destroyed in Bengal.

Vedagarba, who was amongst the five scholars was the founder of the Ganguly clan in Bengal. The Roy Choudhury family originally are Ganguli by surname but when their ancestor Laksmikanta was honoured with the grant of huge Jaigirdari by the Moghul general Man singh in 1608 was also conferred upon with the title of Ray and Choudhury. And from that time his line of descendants are known as the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family , where Sabarna depicts the Gotra.

This Laksmikanta with his indomitable energy and power alongwith his Subjects started the development of his Dominion which included the land of today’s Kolkata. He was the person who in a true sense properly civilized the land and built roads, developed cottage industries, started Durga puja at Barisha in 1610 and was honoured and loved by all. He was not only an able administrator but also a social reformer who fought against the atrocities and bad effects of Kulinism. He banned polygamy in his dominion and declared a social revolution in Bengal. Thus Laksmikanta should be considered as the Father of Kolkata and nobody else. The work which he started was carried forward in periods of time which transformed Kolkata to today’s shape.

His descendants just like him carried forward the good work. They built a number of temples which includes the World famous Kalighat temple, Annapurna temple, Radhakanta temple and lots more. Alongwith various types of social and cultural work the family is determined to preserve their heritage.

The family now consisting of about 20,000 members are scattered all over the World with major settlements at Barisha, Uttarpara, Halisahar,Nimta, Birati, Cuttack, Kheput etc. This is only a brief account of the great family. Our tribute to them. If you are interested to know everything about this family simply visit the official website.
